Retter in der Not – Die Freiwillige Feuerwehr Lüneburg

Again and again they put themselves in danger to help others, and they do it as volunteers. The volunteer fire brigade in Lüneburg is not only the largest in Lower Saxony but also the one with the most call-outs. All 132 members do this work alongside their actual jobs, in the evenings and at weekends.

Their call-outs are varied and have changed over time. Besides fires, in recent years there have been more and more emergencies caused by extreme weather, such as flood and storm surge damage, as well as hazardous materials incidents. No two days are alike: one day they break down doors behind which someone injured or dead is lying, the next they are called to car accidents, then a garage or a roof is on fire somewhere. What matters is that they are fast and safe in what they do.

Die Nordreportage portrays people who, alongside their day jobs, lend a hand in one of the largest volunteer fire brigades in northern Germany and, through their voluntary commitment, sometimes save lives.

The film is in German.
